The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health defines sex addiction, or sexual compulsivity, as, “…a persistent and escalating pattern or patterns of sexual behaviors acted out despite increasingly negative consequences to self or others.” It has been estimated that as many as 14 million Americans struggle with sexual behaviors that interfere with their ability to live a normal life. That equates to roughly 5% of the US population, or one out of every 20 individuals (sash.net).
Unhealthy sexual behavior patterns may include:
- Compulsive masturbation
- Compulsive pornography, cyber sex, phone sex, and sexting
- Multiple anonymous partners
- Unsafe sexual activity
- Frequenting strip clubs and adult bookstores
- Engaging in prostitution
- Sexual aversion
