More About Amy Horihan

Clinical Interests:

I have a diverse background in mental health services including community and home based services, inpatient hospital units, and outpatient clinic settings. However, most of my clinical career has been spent working in residential treatment specializing in complex trauma and preverbal trauma in adolescents and adults. I am experienced in treating trauma-related symptoms and disorder attachment patterns, depression, anxiety, stress management, life transition concerns, organic mood disorders, ADHD, complicated grief/loss, sexuality and personal identify concerns. I have a special interest and expertise with supporting individuals who struggle with psychosis.

Clinical Approach:

I take an eclectic approach to therapy which is focused on on the client's strengths and interests. Most commonly I lean towards using interventions from Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). I frequently use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment and Mindfulness-based interventions and have a special interest in helping people understand themselves and their values and have a greater acceptance and appreciation for themselves. My work is highly influenced Meichenbaum's work related to self-talk, Adler's work related to family systems, and Van Der Kolk's work related to somaticized trauma. I have advanced training in art therapy and visual expression techniques and will use these interventions with interested clients. I am experienced in helping clients explore spirituality and use this strength to improve their life.

Hobbies:

In my free time, I enjoy crafting and painting, reading and being outside. I am especially fond of canoeing and hiking. I love attending theatre and fine arts presentations. I practice yoga almost daily. I volunteer as an animal therapist with one of my overly socialized cats. I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister and a friend.
