More About Lyn Batten

Clinical Interests:

Common diagnoses that I work with are Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, PTSD, Binge Eating Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder and occasionally Conversion Disorder. The psychological issues that accompany those disorders can include unresolved and dysfunctional family of origin patterns of thinking and behaving, relationship problems, boundary issues, poor self-esteem, poor self-care, lack of wisdom in picking partners and friends, lack of assertiveness and conflict avoidance, excessive need for others’ approval, perfectionism and history of abuse including physical, sexual, emotional and spiritual abuse. I do individual therapy with most of my clients but I also enjoy family therapy.

Clinical Approach:

I was trained in Adlerian theory and have greatly valued the wisdom and perceptiveness of that approach in understanding the client’s view of self, others and life. It is a very respectful therapy and assumes that each person has inherent worth and value as opposed to needing to prove that they are worthy by their accomplishments or behavior. In addition, Adlerian theory works hand in glove with the integration of core values and spiritual beliefs. For those clients who want to know how the mental health principles they are being taught are consistent with their Christian beliefs, it is of particular interest to me to help build that bridge.

Hobbies:

I enjoy time with my family and watching my 5 grandchildren grow up as well as attending various school events and their soccer and basketball games. I have a perennial garden and many flowering shrubs that need attention all through the growing season although I am bringing less muscle to the task as the years pass. It took several months for the hummingbirds to find the feeder I put up last August but I finally have some visitors. They are still wary when I am near but even the grandchildren have caught glimpses of them which makes us all smile.
