More About Shelby Helget

Clinical Interests:

Much of my professional experience has been within Inpatient Psychiatric settings so I gravitate heavily towards severe and persistent mental illness, with particular attention and interest in working with Mood Related Disorders, Trauma, and individuals that are living with symptoms of psychosis. I also have clinical interest in co-occurring factors that often intersect with mental health as well as suicidal ideations/self-injurious behaviors. I have worked mostly with adults but engaged in adolescent work in Graduate School so will be seeing individuals ages 12 and above.

Clinical Approach:

I believe that we are the main character of our own stories, truly the expert on our own lives. I find that this approach allows for a stronger therapeutic alliance. I strive to join each person I support through their journey while also taking into consideration the whole person with specific mindful attention to the overall intersections that mental health, trauma, and substance use can bring. My clinical approach is primarily driven from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy lens, however I also utilize Solution Focused Brief Therapy and a Strengths Based approach. While I am not certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, I like to pull from the principles of this modality which include emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.

Hobbies:

I put a lot of value into my interpersonal relationships. I like to spend time with friends and family. I have a fur child (dog) that I very much adore. I enjoy finding new places to explore outside and give myself the space to get lost in a good book, often.
