Mental Health Awareness Month: Why Awareness Matters

The Nystrom & Associates provider consulted for this article on Mental Health Awareness Month is Tony Sharp, LGSW, and ARMHS mental health practitioner.

Every May since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has served as a time to raise awareness about mental health conditions, reduce stigma surrounding mental health challenges, and encourage those who are struggling to seek help. But what exactly is Mental Health Awareness Month, and why does it matter for our communities?

What is Mental Health Awareness Month?

Mental Health Awareness Month began over 70 years ago when Mental Health America (formerly known as the National Mental Health Association) established this observance to increase understanding of mental health conditions and promote mental wellness. Throughout May, organizations across the country host events, share resources, and encourage conversations about mental health.

The core goals of this month-long observance include educating the public about different mental health conditions, fighting stigma that prevents people from seeking help, and supporting those experiencing mental health challenges. Each year typically brings a specific theme that helps focus national conversations on particular aspects of mental health.

Why Awareness Matters

Mental health challenges affect millions of Americans. According to recent statistics, nearly 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year, yet less than half receive treatment. For many, the barrier isn't access to care but rather stigma and misunderstanding about mental health.

“When we raise awareness about mental health, we make treatment feel more approachable,” says community-based provider Tony Sharp, LGSW, “Folks are more likely to reach out for support when they understand that mental health conditions are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of.” They also add that “Community awareness also creates environments where people feel supported rather than judged when they share their struggles.”

As our understanding of mental health continues to evolve, awareness campaigns help ensure that new research and treatment approaches reach those who need them most. This knowledge can literally save lives, especially when it comes to conditions like depression and anxiety that can sometimes lead to suicidal thoughts.

Simple Ways Everyone Can Participate

You don't need special training or resources to make a difference during Mental Health Awareness Month. Here are some simple ways to participate:

  • Wear green, the color of mental health awareness, to show your support
  • Start conversations about mental health with friends and family
  • Practice self-care and check in with loved ones regularly
  • Share reliable mental health resources on social media
  • Learn about different mental health conditions to better understand what others might be experiencing

These small actions help normalize conversations about mental health and create a culture where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

It’s also important to note that if you have someone in your life who has opened up to you about their mental health struggles, it’s okay not to know everything. “You don’t have to understand everything about the ins and outs of a mental health diagnosis to be respectful,” Tony says. “As long as we’re willing to listen respectfully and validate the experience your loved one is sharing with you.”

Remember: Mental Health Matters Year-Round

While May shines a spotlight on mental health awareness, supporting mental wellness is important throughout the year. Mental health is an essential component of overall well-being, just like physical health, and helps us create a healthier, more vibrant world.

“Mental health awareness isn’t just a topic floated around once a year; it’s a daily practice as we explore the world within and around us,” Tony reminds us. “By sharing your own stories, listening to those around you, and recognizing the importance of an open mindset, we can build and maintain a world in which we’re all seen and heard by those around us, and isn’t that the goal?”

If you or someone you love is struggling with mental health challenges, remember that help is available and recovery is possible. Taking that first step toward healing can be difficult, but you don't have to face it alone.
